The first Michael DiMartino (aka CaptainLOver) video I ever saw was his rendition of Britney Spears’ song Womanizer. That is still my favorite, but he’s also done a powerful version of Kelly Clarkson’s Addicted and a version of Kill the Lights (also by Britney Spears) that shows off more of his directing and producing skills. Of course, many people like his tongue-in-cheek version of God Put the Rhythm in Me . . . which he performed with the cast of AltarBoyz. Regardless, my intention today is to alert you to a potential new direction (and a new goal) for Michael and his talents and to see if our community can help him out.
That new direction is outlined in this video message, along with an explanation of why he needs our help. Basically, Michael wants to share some of his own music—of course, in his own style of signed interpretation and movement—and he is seeking just a few thousand dollars to make that jump. The goal is to choreograph and produce videos for two of the original songs; the videos will then be submitted to the first World Deaf Laser Party in Norway next year, an event that will feature dance, interpeted music (both live and recorded, as presented by disc jockeys, video jockeys, and aroma jockeys), and other events for the deaf and the hard of hearing, as well as the hearing.
So, if you can chip in a few dollars, please do—and mention that theGayEditor and The Gay Publishing Company sent you! Thanks for the consideration,

If any group of people has felt the roller coaster ride of the American economy over the past two years—and experienced its effects on small business—that group would have to include each and every one of you. We appreciate your patience and fully expect to begin moving quite a bit faster in the coming months. Thankfully, our three primary investors are still hanging in there with us, still helping us weather what we all hope are the final hills of that uncomfortable ride and the first of more enjoyable times.
In the coming weeks, we’ll be unveiling a couple of major developments. One is the online publication of our first material, our “Raw” Collection, which will consist of unedited, unformatted original submissions. We will start posting those pieces in December. The other development is the announcement of our two final vendors for handling subscriptions and secure pages. We anticipate that these two events will occur simultaneously; doing so will provide the components we’ll need to solicit your input on selection of the final vendor.
So, start getting anxious! But, not too much: for the most part, we are now—for the time-being—a volunteer organization. Just be patient, and know that we’ll move as quickly and steadfastly as possible. Don’t give up!
As always, thanks for your support. Please, let us know what you think,

First, I feel that some explanations are in order. Why has The Gay Publishing Company seen so much delay in starting up? The truth is, we really do know what we’re doing! This is actually the third business that this management team has started: Freelance Library Services in 1987 and the-freelance-editor in the mid-1990s. So, we’ve been through the start-up phase before. The difference this time around is that, while we were able to self-fund those two earlier businesses, we were not able to do so this time around. Hence, the search for funders and loans, which started in October 2007.
At that time, the economy was not yet spiraling out of control and we had initial success. Our initial investors enabled the formation of an advisory board, the distribution of some early publicity, and the creation and launch of our Web site. Then, the freefall started and those investors recalled their funds. Since then, we’ve applied for bank loans (unfortunately, we are consistently turned down because our monetary needs are far below what they want to consider and we don’t anticipate hiring hundreds of employees in the immediate future) and continued to seek private investors. As you may remember, a few individuals provided new funds earlier this summer that allowed us to hire a legal team that filed our incorporation papers and reviewed our author contracts, to explore some social network marketing strategies, and to pay down some accumulating operational debts. With those funds, we had also hoped to launch our publishing efforts, a bold decision that relied on subscription income to balance the budget.
That decision seemed to have been a good one, and an August debut was announced for our virtual and print magazine; but, after about six weeks, subscription income started to dwindle off. That’s when the premier issue was delayed to October. I’ve just this past week been in contact with all subscribers, individually, to let them know of a new delay.
In light of our continuing economic issues, I am no longer comfortable in stating yet another new—and probably, again, overly optimistic—initial publication date. Instead, I am only going to tell you that we are striving to begin publication of edited works in the next several months; certainly by next spring.
Rest assured, I am as anxious to publish as you are to read!

Don’t worry—it’s nothing major; just a change in our publication schedule. After a pretty good run on new subscriptions that lasted for a few weeks, the stream suddenly dried to more of a trickle! Unfortunately, that also slowed our financial advances and our initial publication schedule. So, instead of our first issue being released some time this month (in August) we are now looking toward an October launch.
Of course, since we are asking you to be patient with us, we’ll offer something in exchange. With this delay, we will agree to extend all subscriptions that are received in August and September to include all of next year. Simply stated, subscribe this month or next and you will not have to subscribe again until early 2011. Sound fair?
Rest assured, we are on schedule in our behind-the-scenes work:
- the legal team has nearly completed its work in setting up the company structure and reviewing our contracts and agreements;
- the marketing team is busy laying the groundwork for our social network campaign and finalizing deals with potential sponsors and advertisers; and
- an initial round of authors has been contacted and is working with us to prepare their manuscripts for publication.
See—we’re getting there, and we appreciate your continuing support in getting through the financial rough patches. Stay tuned,
